WikiLeaks' Assange downplays health concerns

LONDON (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, holed up in London's Ecuadorian embassy for nearly six months, played down concerns about his health on Thursday, saying he enjoyed being at the centre of the legal and diplomatic storm.

Assange, 41, whose website angered the United States by releasing thousands of secret diplomatic cables, took sanctuary in Ecuador's embassy in June, jumping bail after exhausting appeals in British courts against extradition to Sweden for sexual assault allegations.

Ecuadorian officials have said the former computer hacker is suffering from a chronic lung ailment as a result of his long stay in the embassy.

Dressed in a dark suit and white shirt fastened with silver-coloured cufflinks in the shape of a 'W' and an 'L', Assange showed no outward sign of health problems.

"The confinement, the circumstances are obviously difficult," was all Assange would say when questioned about his health by Reuters.

"I rather enjoy being swept away in the storm of it all. You only live once so it's important that we do something that is meaningful with our time," he said.

He is said to be living a cramped life inside the modest diplomatic mission. He eats mostly take-out food and uses a treadmill to burn off energy and a vitamin D lamp to make up for the lack of sunlight.

The whistleblower said he has used his time at the embassy to focus on his work, including a book "Cypherpunks" in which he warns that the growing amount of personal data we store online could render society a "slave to the internet".

Speaking in a gilt-corniced conference room, accessed via an entrance hall decorated with a beaming portrait of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, Assange spoke vehemently about the dangers of cyber-surveillance by governments and private companies.

How To Keep Your Back Pain Under Control ? Dentistry, Health and ...

If you are searching for tips on how to take care of your back pain then you need look no more because this is one of the best resources available. Read further and you should be more than satisfied with the advice given for how to take care of your painful condition.

Avoid or lose excess weight to relieve the strain on your back. Everyone has a target weight that is comfortable for your body and back to support. Every pound you add to that number increases the workload and pressure on your spine and body. Cut weight that exceeds this target range and your back will thank you.

Many back pain sufferers find that their chronic ailment is due to a lack of vitamin D, so make sure that you?re receiving a sufficient dosage to avoid a deficiency. Eating food items like fish, milk, breakfast cereals and other foods high in D vitamins will help you to stave off bothersome back pain.

If you already have a spinal injury and you are a smoker, we?ve got some bad news for you. Smoking is actually making it harder for your back to heal. Every time you smoke you are causing a diminished amount of oxygen to get to the spinal chord, and it needs all the oxygen to heal quickly.

When dealing with back pain, the first and utmost important thing to do is to consult your doctor and see what advice he has for you. Just because you think, it isn?t serious doesn?t mean it isn?t, get a professional opinion before you end up hurting yourself worse than you already did.

Sometimes back pain can creep into a pregnant woman?s precious sleep. If this is a problem for you, try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs, reducing pressure on the back and pelvis. A pillow under your growing belly can keep it from pulling your back forward, causing pain.

Strengthening your muscles is as important to healing from a back injury as it is to preventing future injury. That said, people already experiencing back pain should not engage in exercises that put undue strain on their injured muscles. For that reason, walking briskly every day is the best way to work through injuries while also working all the muscles in your body to prevent future injuries.

Quitting smoking can help to ease back pain. People who smoke, especially heavy smokers, do not have as much blood flow to the spine as those who don?t smoke. Without a sufficient amount of blood flow to the spine, your back will hurt.

Take pain medication when you first start feeling pain. Some people tend to ignore back pain, thinking that it will just go away, but the truth is that you?ll be relieved of the pain sooner if you take medication when you first start feeling it. Don?t wait to take your medicine; feel relief that much sooner.

Back pain can arise from any number of sources. It might be a complication, a result of overexertion or simply a problem that someone is naturally predisposed to. Regardless of its source, back pain is something that can be fought against. Reviewing good advice like that provided in this article, can be the first step in getting rid of back pain and enjoying a healthier spine.

Have you been experiencing lower back pain right side?

Business spending plans improve despite fiscal cloud

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A gauge of planned U.S. business spending increased in October by the most in five months, raising cautious optimism that the sharp cutbacks in capital investment during the summer are abating.

Fears of deep reductions in government spending and big tax hikes early next year, a combination known as the fiscal cliff, had caused firms to hunker down.

But orders for non-defense capital goods excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending plans, rose 1.7 percent last month, the Commerce Department said on Tuesday.

"While the improvement in demand offers some encouragement that the worse of the malaise in capital investment may be behind us, there is little to suggest that this may be the beginning of any meaningful upturn," said Millan Mulraine, a senior economist at TD Securities in New York.

The increase in so-called core capital goods orders confounded economists' expectations for a 0.5 percent fall.

Lawmakers and the Obama administration are engaged in talks to avoid automatic spending cuts and tax increases that could suck $600 billion from the economy early next year and fuel a fresh recession. Few visible signs of progress have emerged.

"With intense focus on the fiscal cliff and continued uncertainty surrounding the economic outlook in the new year, it remains to be seen whether the October advance can be maintained. It's not clear that it can be," said Omair Sharif, an economist at RBS in Stamford, Connecticut.

"One month does not make a trend and the trend firmly shows firms are still in a kind of a wait-and-see mode in terms of capital spending."

CONSUMERS MORE BULLISH

Given the lag between orders and shipments, economists expect business investment to remain a drag on economic activity in the fourth quarter.

Shipments of core capital goods declined in October for a fourth straight month, and economists said the stronger orders might not translate into improved shipments until early 2013.

Still, a few economists bumped up their meager fourth-quarter GDP forecasts slightly because the drop in shipments was smaller than they expected. Core goods shipments are used to calculate business spending on equipment and software in the gross domestic product report.

In the third quarter, business spending tumbled for the first time since the 2007-09 recession ended, weighed down by the fiscal cliff, Europe's long-running debt problems and slowing global demand.

While weakness in business spending has been restraining growth, the housing market is gaining momentum and consumer confidence is more bullish, which should support the recovery.

Single-family home prices rose for an eighth straight month in September, a separate report showed. The Standard & Poor's/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.4 percent in September on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Home building is expected to add to growth this year for the first time since 2005 and firming home prices bode well for residential construction activity.

"The strengthening in home prices is a plus for growth through various channels, including increased consumer spending because of wealth and confidence effects," said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics in Valhalla, New York.

A third report showed consumer confidence hit a 4-1/2 year high in November. Economists, however, warned that the fiscal cliff could erode sentiment in the months ahead.

Stocks on Wall Street ended down as investors worried over the lack of progress in working out a deal on the government's budget problem, while prices for U.S. Treasury debt eked out modest gains. The dollar firmed against a basket of currencies.

Orders for U.S.-made durable goods -- items meant to last three years or more -- were unchanged in October as gains in machinery, fabricated metal products, and computer and electronic products offset the drag from automobiles, defense goods and civilian aircraft.

Economists had expected durable goods orders to fall 0.6 percent last month. They rose 9.2 percent in September.

Excluding transportation, orders rose 1.5 percent in October after increasing 1.7 percent the prior month.

Strategy of innovation and exporting enables Martek Marine to ...

Manufacturer Martek Marine - a global leader in innovative equipment and systems for ships - continues to forecast unprecedented growth after expanding by 33 per cent to post a ?6.9 million turnover and a seven-fold increase in net profit to ?1m in the last financial year.

As MD Paul Luen explains, it?s not always been all plain sailing for the 54-strong Rotherham-based business which has steered a strategy of innovation and exporting through unchartered waters to achieve its current trailblazing success.

Since picking brambles at the age of seven and selling them to shoppers outside my local supermarket to supplement my pocket money, I?ve always been ?insanely driven? and possess a cast-iron self-belief that you can achieve absolutely anything if you put your mind to it.

Since setting out to create and grow a company which manufactures and supplies environmental and safety monitoring technology for the global shipping industry, this self-belief has endured some rigorous tests ? particularly over period spanning 2008-2011.

I and two fellow directors founded Martek back in the heady days of 2000 when the spectre of economic downturn was little more than a bad memory of the early ?90s.

With a background in the marine industry but absolutely no experience of running a business, we launched Martek with a tight budget of ?6,000. We made up for a severe shortage in cash with an abundance of energy, drive and commitment to be the best at what we do, be a great employer ? and attract outperforming robust management teams. We also wanted to do some good in the world as our products help to save lives and reduce environmental pollution.

For eight consecutive years we?d enjoyed year on year growth so we were more than rudely awakened when, like millions of fellow SMEs, we sailed head on into the financial storms. It was a stiff test and we rose to it.

Although we made some hard decisions, on the positive front, the soul searching we underwent as directors about Martek?s strengths and deficiencies, made us more creative, innovative and more productive than ever. One mantra that we?d always held as a constant went to the core of who we are as a company. A commitment to teamwork, ownership, improvement and enjoyment had always been central to Martek?s identity ? but could these qualities really give us what we needed to succeed when the chips were down?

We ramped up our innovation and exporting ? as a result of which we are pushing towards a ?10 million turnover for the 2012-2013 financial year (February 2013).

A milestone 12 months have included expanding to Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore where an eight-strong team is making waves across China and Singapore ? and heading a European consortium which is developing disruptive technology for shop ballast water treatment in a ?25bn market.

Innovation and investment continue to chart our success as we are poised to launch a series of new products including electronic chart navigation for ships whilst forging a partnership with Orange to pioneer telecom technology in ships.

A ?250k injection into an enterprise resource planning (ERP) programme is further enhancing our business processes and a recruitment drive continues apace with a staff increase of 40 per cent in the last twelve months alone.

Ongoing strategic expansion and cutting-edge products have enabled us to out-perform the market supported by over 50 sales and service partners internationally. Now exporting to over 80 countries worldwide we are seeking to attract top talent who relish an exciting career in international trade as we continue to buck the trend of recession in the global market and create opportunity.

Reflecting on the tough times, as it turned out, we didn?t have to sacrifice any of our ideals, and we didn?t have to change Martek into the kind of company that none of us would have wanted to lead. Nevertheless, there have been changes ? some of the most important being the way we think as directors, which have seen us adopt a savvier approach to decision making that navigated us through the stormy waters of recession to emerge a stronger business than we were in 2008.?

The results of a?study?posted recently by the Internet Innovation Alliance (IIA) indicate that the average household can save $8,870 per year through the use of high-speed broadband Internet access to comparison-shop, make purchases, and engage in other transactions.? The savings estimates ranged from a high of nearly $2,500 in average entertainment savings to $47 in annual costs of postage for paying bills.

IIA Founding Co-Chairman Bruce Mehlman commented, ?These money-saving tactics are critical in a challenging economy and are contingent upon access to high-speed broadband. Transitioning to next-generation networks is crucial for all Americans to be able to make the Internet part of their financial strategy.?

Other savings identified by the study include travel expenses ($1,659 average annual savings), food costs ($994 average annual savings), and newspaper subscription rates ($161 average annual savings).

The IIA describes itself as a ?broad-based coalition of business and non-profit organizations that aim to ensure every American, regardless of race, income or geography, has access to the critical tool that is broadband Internet.? Members include One Economy, AT&T, Americans for Tax Reform, Connected Nation, Corning, the U.S. Cattlemen?s Association, the National Grange and Corning.

At bottom, the IIA study reaffirms the essential and increasing value of broadband to meaningful participation in the national economy, and it also highlights that the value (or ?savings?) to be derived from broadband access far outweighs the initial cost of procuring broadband.

One might also observe that the value that the study indicates can be derived from broadband ? and particularly from the ability to connect with every other user on any network ? would far outweigh the potential cost of a few dollars of universal service contribution each month to support those networks, but that unfortunately remains a debate for another day?

Don't like the Android 4.2 clock widget? Fixed 4.2 Clock Widget can help

Android Central

One of the visual changes we were 'treated' to in Android 4.2 when it first dropped, was a re-designed digital clock widget. I say 'treated' because its design is a point of contention for many. Personally, I don't mind it, but many others have a vastly differing opinion. The mixture of bold and regular font doesn't cut it for some people, especially when compared to the relative simplicity of the light Roboto font we've all come to know and love.

But, this is Android, so there's usually a way to change these things. This ones called Fixed 4.2 Clock Widget, and is available for free in the Google Play Store. And, it does exactly what it says on the tin. You can alter the font to your liking, and you can go all bold if that's your thing. But, it gives us a simple way to bring back the clock widget of old, and it's also compatible with the Android 4.2 lockscreen. Tapping on the clock widget also takes you into the stock clock app as you would hope.

And, aside from mentioning that it also displays your alarm times -- as the stock widget also does -- that's about it. If you like it enough, there's a donate version also available, but all the features are available in the free version.

4 Easy Habits That Boost Productivity - Business Insider

?

The technology age has made it easier to get distracted as surfing for anything on the web is a quick click away.

For smaller companies, this decrease in productivity is extremely costly since resources are slim. Therefore, workers have to be as productive as possible. This is also true if you work from home.?

?It can be incredibly hard to stay focused when you work for yourself, because there?s no boss over your shoulder or IT department monitoring your internet usage,??Kelly Gurnett,?career expert and blogger, told us.

?If you want to spend hours on Facebook or Amazon.com, you?can, technically?but you really can?t, because then your projects won?t get completed and your business will suffer.

To get a better understanding of the most effective way to work, we turned to Gurnett and?Dan Schawbel, founder of?Millennial Branding, a Gen Y research and management consulting firm, who have both built successful businesses on their own without much supervision. Here are their tips:

1. Know your internal clock.?In order to better concentrate, Gurnett?works around her internal clock, which determines how productive you are at different times in the day.?

For example, Gurnett is more of an early bird and she knows she can write ?a handful of blog posts without losing focus, drawing a blank, or feeling the siren call of Facebook or Twitter? in the mornings, so this is when she produces content.?

In the afternoon, her brain is less creative so she uses this time to finish tasks such as proofreading, formatting posts, and billing.?

2. Make a to-do list.?Even if you already know what you need to complete, it?s better to have the list right in front of you. Schawbel told us that he creates a list with big things he needs to accomplish every week.?

?It?s an ongoing list, but I do it so that even if I veer off, I know what I need to get done,? he said. To know what?s urgent,?Schawbel highlights these tasks in red and completes them within a few days.

3. Check your e-mail in intervals.?Checking your e-mail can be addicting, especially since it?s so easy now to access it on smartphones. To stop herself from wasting too much time replying to e-mails, Gurnett limits how often she checks her messages.?

?I usually check my messages in the morning, at lunch and midway through the afternoon, and I try to process as many of them as I can in one sitting: read them, respond to them as necessary, delete them,? she said.

4. Reply immediately.?Even though Gurnett limits checking her e-mails down to a minimum, once she does check it, she makes sure she answers it.

?Once I?ve opened a message, I make myself take some sort of action on it,? she said. ?I can?t just mark it for later since that just creates twice as much work in the long run.?

Schawbel agrees with this habit.

He told us that when he sees an e-mail, he responds immediately because if not, it?s possible to lose out on an opportunity.??I?once lost a TV appearance on CNN because I waited to think about it,? he said.

?If it?s a thing that requires more thought, it?s still good to e-mail them back to ask if you can get back to them at the end of the week.??

Whatever your methods are for staying on task, you need to learn how to work as efficient as possible, and the best way of doing that is knowing yourself and understanding when and where you work best.??The more sense the schedule makes for you, the easier it will be to stick to,? Gurnett said.

South Africa spent $3 billion on 2010 World Cup

By GERALD IMRAY

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:12 p.m. ET Nov. 23, 2012

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - South Africa spent more than $3 billion on the 2010 World Cup, and in return gained an "intangible legacy" from the first world soccer showpiece in Africa, the country's government said Friday in its final report on the tournament.

In the "2010 FIFA World Cup Country Report," released nearly 2 1/2 years after the event, South Africa's government said it spent $1.1 billion on building and upgrading stadiums alone.

Transport was the biggest cost, with $1.3 billion dedicated to improving road, rail and air links and a further $392 million on the country's main ports of entry.

In the absence of any final definitive figures on how much South Africa earned in total from being the host, the report said the World Cup had left an intangible legacy of pride and unity among South Africans and had changed the country's image as undeveloped, crime-ridden and dangerous in the eyes of the rest of the world.

"To top it all, we didn't have lions roaming the streets and we did have ATMs," the report, published by the ministry of sport, added light-heartedly.

It did predict a $6 billion boost to South Africa's economy as a result of the monthlong World Cup, according to a study by risk analysis and finance company Grant Thornton, but that was a mid to long-term projection.

FIFA reported it made a $631 million profit from the 2007-10 World Cup cycle and earned income of $3.65 billion from 2010 World Cup contracts. FIFA said it spent $1.298 billion on the World Cup in South Africa and also gave $100 million to the World Cup Legacy Trust, a fund that supports grassroots soccer projects.

"The World Cup in South Africa was a huge, huge financial success for Africa, for South Africa and for FIFA," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said in 2011 as the world body published its own financial report.

While critics have said that such a huge outlay on a 30-day sports event was impractical for South Africa - and the final word on whether it was an economic success was still pending - the government could argue that it had already earned over $400 million from the more than 300,000 tourists that visited for the World Cup.

The upgrade to much of South Africa's transport infrastructure was a long-term investment, the government said.

The expensive World Cup stadiums are still underused, however, and some are losing money. The Cape Town Stadium - reportedly the most expensive of the seven new venues at $600 million - is in the most trouble.

"This report will also serve as a reference guide and benchmark for planning other major sporting events," South Africa's government said in a statement to introduce the publication, which featured the 2010 World Cup logo and was embossed with shiny gold letters.

South Africa has said it is considering a bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Calif.-Vegas party train could hit tracks in 2013

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? As if a weekend in Las Vegas isn't wild enough for Southern Californians, a Nevada entrepreneur is about to add five more hours of party to either end.

After striking an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad last week, the Las Vegas Railway Express is one step closer to bringing to life the X Train, a luxurious "party train" complete with big screen TVs, recliners and two ultra lounges.

"The whole idea is when you get on a train, you feel like you're in Las Vegas," said Michael Barron, president and CEO of the $100 million venture that hopes to launch its maiden voyage on New Year's Eve 2013. "It's essentially a nightclub on wheels."

Tourists can't get from Southern California to Las Vegas by rail alone, and Barron's company isn't the first to try and fix that. The much-talked-about XpressWest project proposes a high-speed train connecting Sin City to the region from which it draws 25 percent of its tourists.

But it's a multi-billion-dollar proposal that would require setting new tracks, and it's often panned as a "train to nowhere" because the first phase would start in relatively obscure Victorville, about 100 miles outside of Los Angeles.

The X Train proposal calls for an Amtrak crew aboard a 576-passenger train that runs at standard speeds on traditional tracks.

It would start in Fullerton, Calif. ? already home to an Amtrak station and part of Southern California's Metrolink commuter train network ? and end in downtown Las Vegas.

A conditional agreement with Union Pacific, approved Nov. 16, will allow the company to use a rail line that's currently limited to freight trains and hasn't served passengers since Amtrak discontinued its Desert Wind service in 1997 due to low ridership.

Tickets for the adults-only train would cost $99 each way and include a meal and beverage, with plenty more alcohol available for purchase. To keep ticket prices low, the company would try to make money booking Las Vegas hotels and entertainment for passengers.

With initial plans for one trip a day on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday, Barron believes he can attract tourists weary of the weekend traffic gridlock and perhaps hung over from their weekend revelry.

"Sunday is horrific," Barron said of the Interstate 15 corridor that links Las Vegas and its neighbor. "So now you've been up for 40 hours gambling and you have to drive for seven hours ? that's just horrible. But people do it in spite of that!"

John Lawson, who was in Las Vegas from Orange County for a few days over Thanksgiving, said he'd like the option of hopping on a train rather than braving bumper-to-bumper traffic on the way back.

"If you party really hard, it sucks driving back," said Lawson, 28.

Vegas visitor Christina Bojorquez, 25, said she'd have to weigh the cost of the train ride against other cheap options, including discounted flights and sharing the expense of driving to Vegas.

"For special occasions it would be good, but not all the time," she said.

Tom Skancke, a transportation consultant for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, pointed to the proposed trains and other alternatives to personal cars as options that could entice a new generation of tourists. A new Greyhound Express nonstop bus route between L.A. and Las Vegas launched earlier this month.

"These modes of transportation do appeal to a younger, more eco-friendly traveler," Skancke said. "This generation is more interested in passenger rail, transit and high-speed rail than previous generations."

There's still work to be done on the X Train to get it running by late 2013. The sixteen cars the company has purchased need to be renovated, and a station needs to be completed in downtown Vegas.

"We're four years and $12 million into it. It's a lot of infrastructure building," Barron said. "This is a simple concept in discussion, but it's complicated to do."

Gigantic orphan planet: Homeless world hurtles through space without star (+video)

The free-floating object, called CFBDSIR2149, is likely a gas giant planet four to seven times more massive than Jupiter.

It has no orbit nor a star attached to it. This planet free-floating planet is labeled CFBDSIR2149 and also referred to as CFBDSIR J214947.2-040308.9.

The free-floating object, called CFBDSIR2149, is likely a gas giant planet four to seven times more massive than?Jupiter, scientists say in a new study unveiled today (Nov. 14). The planet cruises unbound through space relatively close to Earth (in astronomical terms; the Milky Way galaxy is 100,000 light-years wide), perhaps after being booted from its own solar system.

"If this little object is a planet that has been ejected from its native system, it conjures up the striking image of?orphaned worlds, drifting in the emptiness of space," study leader Philippe Delorme, of the Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics of Grenoble in France, said in a statement.

Orphan planet, or something else?

Delorme and his team detected CFBDSIR2149's infrared signature using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, then examined the body's properties with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. [Video: Rogue Planet Has No Parent Star]

The newfound object appears to be among a stream of young stars called the AB Doradus moving group, the closest such stream to our own solar system.

Scientists think the AB Doradus stars all formed together between 50 million and 120 million years ago. If CFBDSIR2149 is indeed associated with the group ? and researchers cite a nearly 90 percent probability ? then the object is similarly young.

And if the discovery team is right about CFBDSIR2149's age, the body is likely a planet, with an average temperature of 806 degrees Fahrenheit (430 degrees Celsius), researchers said.

There's still a slight chance that CFBDSIR2149 is a?brown dwarf?? a strange object that's larger than a planet but too small to trigger the internal nuclear fusion reactions required to become a full-fledged star. Additional observations should help decide the matter.

"We need new observations to confirm that this object belongs to the AB Doradus moving group," Delorme told SPACE.com via email. "With a good distance measurement and a more accurate proper motion, we will be able to increase (or decrease) the probability that it is indeed a planet."

The new study was published today in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Billions of starless planets?

The discovery of a starless?alien planet?would not be shocking, at least not anymore. In the last year or so, astronomers have spotted a number of such orphan worlds ? so many, in fact, that some scientists think parentless planets are the rule rather than the exception.

One 2011 study, for example, estimated that rogue worlds outnumber "normal" planets with obvious host stars?by at least 50 percent?throughout the Milky Way. If that's the case, the galaxy that includes Earth probably also hosts billions of orphan planets.

And gas giants may be in the minority among these solitary wanderers, researchers say.

"We now know that such massive planets are rare and that Neptunes or Earth-mass planets are much more common," Delorme said. "We also know that massive objects are more difficult to eject [from solar systems] than light ones. If you follow the rationale, you deduce that ejected exo-Neptunes and ejected exo-Earths should be much more common than objects like CFBDSIR2149."

It's exciting to have a starless planet so close to Earth, researchers say. Future telescopes should be able to learn a great deal about CFBDSIR2149, since they won't have to contend with the overwhelming glare of a nearby host star.

"This object is a really easy-to-study prototype of the 'normal' giant planets we hope to discover and study with the upcoming?generation of direct-imaging instruments," Delorme said. "It will help to improve our forecast of these objects' luminosity and hence help us discover them ?and, once discovered, it will help us understand the physics of their atmospheres."

Auto Insurance Tips That Can Work For You! - Empower Network

You need auto insurance to have a car. Not all companies have the same options, they are very different. Learning about the different types of auto insurance and the different discounts available will let you get the coverage you need at a price you can afford.

You should have a basic knowledge of insurance coverage plans when you are shopping for car insurance. Your insurance may only be for a single vehicle, but the cost will still be affected by many different variables. Injury claims, death and legal costs are covered by the bodily injury part of the insurance.

TIP! To lower your premium consider raising your deductible. When it comes to the cost of your insurance, the amount of your deductible makes the biggest difference in how much you pay.

It is important to know about the different types of coverage. You should be certain that you have a policy that covers any possible incident. Liability only covers the damage you do to someone else and their property whereas collision and collateral cover your property as well. It?s also important that you have coverage in the case of an accident involving an uninsured driver, or from damage cause by things like fires.

Reconsider purchasing costly add-ons for your car. Luxury items are great to have, but they are things you can live without. It is possible that in the event of theft or an accident that these additions are not covered by your insurance anyway.

When you are with a professional organization, it is possible to get great discounts. For example, if you are an AARP member or a credit union member, you could qualify for auto insurance discounts.

TIP! If you plan to move in the near future, be sure to check the car insurance rates of the location you are considering. Areas that have high crime or are dangerous for other reasons have higher rates, while less-dangerous areas, such as suburbs and rural areas, usually have lower rates.

In case you ever have to file a claim to your insurance company, know that insurance companies want a lot of detailed documentation. You can use your cell phone to record the time and place of any collision and the damage resulting from it. It pays to always have a camera on hand in your vehicle.

Be sure to keep track of all modifications you have made to your car and any accessories you have installed in it. You?ll need this as proof if your car is stolen or damaged. Be sure that your auto insurance will cover the expensive modifications that you make to your car if you experience theft or damage.

If you need additional coverage, look into optional insurance packages. In the end, the extra expense of some insurance policies may be worth it. If you get in a hit-and-run accident or one where the other party has no insurance, you will be out of luck unless you have uninsured motorist coverage.

TIP! Each time you prepare to renew your insurance policy, you should carefully analyze the terms and conditions. Make your information current.

Bundling your insurance needs can give you big discounts. You should talk to your agent about insuring your home and car together. Although two separate insurance policies can be a better choice, you still want to make sure the deal you?re getting is good, and has plenty of coverage.

Maintain the paperwork showing each of the insurance payments that you make. On the chance that you get pulled over and need to show proof of coverage, you?ll have a record of your premium payment.

One surprising, though somewhat obvious, way to get an insurance discount, especially for males under the age of 25, is to get married. Some have found that marrying saved them almost 40 percent. So if you have that special someone, it may be time to tie the knot and save.

TIP! Do not jump for the first lower rate you discover, though; check with your current insurers before changing companies. Sometimes, your current agent can match any lower offers that you find.

Make sure to stay informed about basic insurance terms prior to searching for a company to get a policy from. The exact details will be somewhat different from place to place, but the main ideas will remain similar regardless of where you are looking. Understanding the verbiage or checking online quotes before speaking with a carrier can help you better review potential policies and make sure you are purchasing appropriate coverage.

Every driver has a different rate that they pay for their auto insurance. While it is true that the type of car you drive and your coverage type influence this, these are not the only factors that influence the cost of a policy. It?s possible for a few select people to get the same or better insurance cheaper. You, too, can get great rates if you learn the ins and outs of auto insurance premiums.

In Self DefenseIn Self Defense is inspired by the true-life story of a martial arts legend who died at the hand of his own son. After fighting in the jungles of the South Pacific in World War II, Willy Wetzel and his family migrated from Indonesia to America in 1956. Willy opened one of the first martial arts schools in the United States in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer and became known worldwide for his mastery of many martial arts forms. The finest pupil Willy ever taught, was his second son, Roy Wetzel. The Wetzels all had their battle scars, some more visible than others. When Roy returned from Viet Nam with a Purple Heart, he hoped for a peaceful life at home. Instead Roy found himself in a fight with his father. One fateful night, their strained relationship finally came to a head. As Roy's young daughter lay asleep in the next room, a weapon-filled brutal fight between father and son ensued. The aftermath of Willy's last skirmish would leave Roy bloody and beaten and charged by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with Murder. This led to a controversial trial and the original court transcripts contained in the second half of this non-fiction novel give a compelling account of the prolonged legal contest that stirred up many debates. Following the lives of the Wetzels in intricate detail, In Self Defense will keep you turning the page till the very end.

(AP) ? The alleged ringleader of an unsuccessful plot to bomb a highway bridge in Ohio was sentenced Tuesday to more than 11 years in prison.

Douglas Wright of Indianapolis was sentenced to 138 months in prison. He apologized in court to his family and the community, saying he was an addict and needed help for substance abuse, not just prison.

Two other men ? 20-year-old Brandon Baxter of Lakewood and 20-year-old Connor Stevens of Berea ? were to learn their sentences later Tuesday.

Judge David Dowd had ruled last week that the men should be sentenced as terrorists, making them subject to harsher prison terms.

A fourth defendant will be sentenced Wednesday and a fifth is undergoing a psychiatric exam.

Stevens, Baxter and Wright pleaded guilty to conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction, knowingly attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage property with explosives. There was no plea deal that would have reduced their sentences.

Last week Dowd backed a government request to consider stricter sentences based on a "terrorist enhancement" for the trio. The ruling that the three were trying to intimidate the government expanded possible sentences from five or six years to 15 to 30 years or more.

The men were arrested by the FBI and had targeted a bridge over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park between Cleveland and Akron. The FBI has said the public was never in danger and the device was a dud provided by an informant.

The suspects were described by the government as self-proclaimed anarchists who acted out of anger against corporate America and the government.

The defense called the case entrapment, with the informant guiding the way, and said the plot was more an act of vandalism than anti-government terrorism. They asked for sentences in the range of five years.

The government said the plot "was meant to convey a message to the civilian population, the corporate world, the financial system, and all levels of government."

Microsoft Touch Cover (for Surface)

The Microsoft Touch Cover, as the name implies, is all about touch. In one instance it's a soft cover for the Microsoft Surface RT tablet ($699.00 direct) touch screen, putting the Surface RT to sleep when closed and waking it back up when opened. But it's also a touch device in its own right, offering a new look at the basic keyboard, with 77 pressure sensitive "keys" and a capacitive touchpad with pressure-sensitive right- and left-click buttons. And finally, when folded around behind the Surface, the Surface switches to touch-only input, disabling the keyboard functions so that the Touch Cover is just a cover again. That's a lot of functionality to fit into a 3-millimeter-thick flap, but the Touch Cover handles it with well-designed aplomb.

Design and Features
The Touch Cover is, first and foremost, a cover for the various Surface tablets. The Touch Cover attaches to the Surface tablet via the magnetic docking connector, snapping into place with a satisfying thunk and seating properly without problems. And because the connection is magnetic, the cover stays securely attached, even when you pick up the tablet and let the cover dangle freely.

Measuring only 0.13 by 10.98 by 7.36 inches (HWD), the slim Touch Cover adds less than half a pound of weight (7.4 ounces) to the Surface, but expands the tablet's productive capability immensely. It also protects the screen while being easy to clean itself. The Touch Cover is spill resistant, and with none of the nooks and crannies of a regular keyboard, it can be wiped down for easy cleaning. The Touch Cover is also something of a fashion statement, available in five eye-popping colors (Black, White, Cyan, Magenta, and Red). This also makes the Touch Cover the prime choice for techie fashionistas, as the similar Microsoft Type Cover is only available in black.

The keyboard itself has no regular keys?no moving parts at all, really?relying instead on a pressure-sensitive layer sandwiched inside. This pressure-sensitive function not only allows you to type on the Touch Cover, but also to rest your hands on the keys as you normally would; the cover can distinguish the difference in pressure between a resting finger and a key press. Because the Touch Cover is so thin, the actual typing feel is a bit like typing on a thin mouse pad, but the responsiveness of the keys makes for a far more usable experience than we anticipated.

Because there is no tactile feedback when typing on the Touch Cover, the Surface adds a small audio cue that sounds quietly whenever a key is pressed. It's a small touch, but it's the sort of detail that makes a difference while using the Touch Cover, provided you don't mute the volume. The Touch Cover may not appeal to touch typists, however, as the flat, unmoving keys of the Touch Cover make it much easier to drift out of position on the keyboard. In an attempt to mitigate this, the usual F and J keys have an added printed accent on each key to indicate the home row, but it's so low profile that it doesn't quite do the trick.

Given that the Touch Cover is made exclusively for Microsoft's Surface tablets, it should be no surprise that Windows 8 (and Windows RT) functionality is built in, with functions from the Charms Bar found in the F1-F12 buttons. These include volume controls, and Charms for Search, Connect, Devices, and Settings. You've also got function keys for Home, End, PgUp, PgDn, and the usual Esc and Del keys. These same Windows 8-specific features can be found on the Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard , so don't think that they're exclusive to the Touch Cover.

The Touch Cover also features a small capacitive touchpad, for those who want a regular mousing experience rather than the pure touch-centric navigation of the Surface RT tablet. If there's a flaw with the Touch Cover, it's the size of the touchpad?a tiny 2.7 by 1.3 inches. The trackpad on the Touch Cover also has the same texture as the rest of the keyboard, which may be uncomfortable for some when trying to scroll or to click and drag. That said, the trackpad on the Touch Cover still provides simple functionality, like left- and right-clicking, two finger scrolling, click and drag, and a two-finger tap brings up the command bar.

Performance
In terms of actual typing speeds, you likely won't be typing at top speed the way you would on a springy mechanical keyboard, but you will be able to do considerably better than you would using the on-screen keyboard alone. Microsoft estimates that typists who type 25 words per minute using an onscreen keyboard will be able to roughly double that with the Touch Cover, but won't be flying at 80 or 90 WPM like they would on a normal keyboard. Our own testing seems to confirms this.

The other issue that came up when testing the Touch Cover was typing fatigue. Your fingers and wrists will tire sooner when using the Touch Cover, and we imagine that the ergonomics of it are far from ideal. For anyone intending to do a lot of typing using their Surface tablet, we'd suggest switching to one of the Windows 8 Bluetooth keyboards.

Typing on the touch cover feels a little bit like typing on a thin mouse pad. The texture is soft and reminiscent of fabric, and the thickness of the cover provides a little bit of cushioning, but not a lot. The repeated impact of typing on a flat, largely ungiving surface isn't always comfortable. The repeated impact on the fingers is far more noticeable than on any standard keyboard, and the Touch Cover is one of the first times I've ever felt anything that could be described as typing fatigue. I can only imagine what the ergonomic implications of using the Touch Cover extensively might be.

I can't seem to get used to the fact that the Touch Cover just feels weird. It's more responsive, yes, but it doesn't provide any tactile feedback, meaning that you'll need to either listen for the audio cues that sound with each keystroke, or closely watch the screen to be sure that every keystroke is registering. Alternately, because you're just tapping on a largely undifferentiated surface, there is a tendency to drift as you type, so you'll need to also watch your keyboard, even if you're normally a touch typist. The result is a keyboard that requires extra attention for what should be one of the most unobtrusive aspects of PC use, typing.

Additionally, as mentioned earlier, typing fatigue is a real issue on the Touch Cover. I regularly spend my days at the keyboard without issue, but I got tired of banging my fingertips in only a few minutes. The bottom line here? The Touch Cover isn't for serious typing, it's for the occasional bit of text entry, like a URL, a search term, or a tweet. It's certainly more comfortable and usable than an onscreen keyboard, but it's no replacement for a regular keyboard. Surface users who expect to get a lot of productive use out of their tablet may be better served by getting the Microsoft Type Cover, or by using the Touch Cover primarily as a cover and buying a mobile keyboard like the Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Keyboard when typing for long periods of time.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Microsoft Touch Cover (for Surface) with several other keyboards side by side.

Asia Briefing Releases New Guide: Human Resources and Payroll ...

Labor contracts, social insurance contributions, salary packages, visas for foreigners, and more!

Nov. 16 ? Asia Briefing, in cooperation with its parent company Dezan Shira & Associates, has just released a new 102-page guide introducing everything that foreign investors in China should be familiar with from the human resources and payroll management perspective. This guide, titled ?Human Resources and Payroll in China (Third Edition),? is immediately available as a PDF download on the Asia Briefing Bookstore.

A firm understanding of China?s laws and regulations related to human resources and payroll management is essential for foreign investors who want to establish or are already running foreign-invested entities in China. This guide aims to satisfy that information demand, while also serving as a valuable tool for local managers and HR professionals who may need to explain complex points of China?s labor policies in English.

The first chapter of this guide focuses on the recruitment process in China. While the overall process for hiring people in China does not differ much from elsewhere in the world, there are a number of points that require special attention. The rest of the guide has been designed to cover the most important issues relating to managing a Chinese workforce in enough detail to satisfy the requirements and curiosity of most managers either working in China or involved in HR from the headquarters abroad.

Chinese law places significant obligations on employers to remain legally compliant in labor matters. In this guide, we also address the major issues in managing employment relationships in China.

Included in this guide:

  • Recruiting Professionals
  • Hiring Staff
  • Handling Payroll
  • Managing the Employment Relationship
  • Terminating the Employment Relationship
  • Arranging for Visas

Within these topics, we address labor contracts, company rulebooks, salary packages, social insurance contributions, special circumstances for employees (extended sickness or pregnancy), termination and severance pay, and visas for foreign staff and Chinese staff being sent to work abroad.

?Human Resources and Payroll in China (Third Edition)? is out now and immediately available as a PDF download on the Asia Briefing Bookstore.

This publication is based on the knowledge of Dezan Shira & Associates, a specialist foreign direct investment practice providing corporate establishment, business advisory, tax advisory and compliance, accounting, payroll, due diligence and financial review services to multinationals investing in emerging Asia.
