I had already earned my criminal justice degree online, and though I had a new career in a great field that I enjoyed very much, it still left a little something to be desired. It was at this time that I chose to supplement my degree with a computer forensics degree, as well. The biggest positive to this was that since I had already achieved my criminal justice degree online a year before, I could simply start working on my computer forensics degree and a lot of the ground I had covered there would be useful and help me achieve my degree more quickly than otherwise.

A computer forensics degree and a criminal justice degree online proved to be a five year commitment altogether, but the positive benefits it has had on both my career and self esteem can not be overstated. After all, the ability to combine my passion for technology and law required almost no thought, and the position I had already achieved at a very technologically advanced company could not hurt from a little extra nudge in the direction of higher education, though I already held a degree.

The computer forensics degree showed my employer that I had a solid understanding of how to operate the machines and gather evidence from computers that were either seemingly destroyed or that had been compromised in some way, and the achievement of my criminal justice degree online would show that I already had a deep understanding of how to handle evidence and work within a set level of procedure. Both of these combined set my career on an upward trajectory that has yet to slow down, and I have gained the respect of both colleagues and my industry by being both thorough and versatile in the areas that I choose to work within.

The best advice I can give, particularly in reference to a computer forensics degree, is to try not to become discouraged. After all, you are working toward a better career and a bigger paycheck in the end, and a computer forensics degree is a highly sought after credential that shows an intimate familiarity with technology that may need to be used both in an investigation and in the wider world of criminal justice. Thus far, my skills have been put to good use by several companies that have contracted the company that I work for, and has found wider use as an independent contractor.
