PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. -- A Florida Panhandle marine park is helping investigate the deaths of a record number of dolphins along the northern Gulf of Mexico.
The News Herald ( http://bit.ly/z6Camy) reports researchers at the Gulf World Marine Park in Panama City Beach responded to 14 dolphin standings last year and three more this year in an area stretching from Walton to Franklin counties.
They have collected and sent biological samples for testing. Gulf World also has portable X-ray and ultrasound equipment to help rescued dolphins.
The number of unexplained bottlenose dolphin deaths along the border of Texas and Louisiana and into the Florida Panhandle has soared. The number in January and February is more than triple the average from previous years.
So far researchers have determined five deaths were caused by a bacterial infection.?
