Japan bees cook enemy in 'hot defensive bee ball'

TOKYO (Reuters) - Don't mess with Japanese honeybees. Not only do they cooperate to attack their enemies, researchers now say their brains may actually be processing and responding to the threat.

When confronted with their arch-enemy, the aggressive giant Asian hornet, the honeybees will attack it by swarming en masse around the hornet and forming what scientists call a "hot defensive bee ball" - a move unique to their species.

With up to 500 bees all vibrating their flight muscles at once, the bee ball cooks the hornet to death.

While this defensive maneuver has been known for some time, the mechanism behind it has been shrouded in mystery. But researchers at Japan's University of Tokyo, through study of the bees' brains, have now found that neural activity in bees taking part in the attack picks up.

"When the hornet, the Japanese honeybee's natural enemy, enters a colony, the bees quickly form a 'hot defensive bee ball,' trapping the hornet inside and heating it up to 46 degrees C (115 F) with their collective body heat," said Atsushi Ugajin, a University of Tokyo graduate student.

He said that while the high temperature phase lasts about 20 minutes, it often takes up to an hour before the hornet dies inside the ball.

Set off if bees posted as "guards" at the entrance to the colony detect an intruder, the move evolved because the bee's stingers aren't strong enough to penetrate the hornet's tough exo-skeleton, researchers said.

The research team, whose latest research on the phenomenon appeared in the scientific journal PLoS ONE in mid-March, was astounded by the fact that the collective heat generated by the group, while fatal for the hornet, leaves the bees unaffected.

They were also surprised that the bees used perfectly coordinated teamwork during the process, said Takeo Kubo, a professor at the University of Tokyo graduate school.

"When an outsider enters, the honeybees are immediately on their guard. Then, all at once, they gather to attack," he said.

"So, it isn't one commanding all the rest, we believe in this moment of emergency they're acting collectively."

Curious about why the bees attack this way, the researchers examined their brains and found that neural activity increased in the bees involved with the bee ball, apparently reflecting processing of thermal stimuli.

The group also said that while this discovery may seem to demonstrate that the Japanese honeybee is "smarter" than its European counterpart, this is not the case - it's merely a matter of development in response to environmental factors.

"When a member of the colony, a worker drone, is killed, this is a grievous loss for the hive. Evolution has reacted in this way (for their survival)," said Masato Ono, a Japanese honeybee and hornet expert who was also part of the study.

And many fundamental unknowns remain.

"One of the great mysteries for us is how animals' brains have evolved and how they operate," Kubo said. "This will be for us the next great puzzle to examine."

Producers of the Broadway-bound revival of "Jekyll & Hyde" announced Tuesday that the Grammy-nominated singer will join Constantine Maroulis in the musical that's slated to come to New York in spring 2013 after a 25-week national tour that starts in San Diego on Oct. 2,

Cox, who sang the lead role in Elton John and Tim Rice's Broadway musical "Aida," has had six top 20 Billboard R&B singles, including the smash "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here."

Maroulis, who was a finalist on the fourth season of "American Idol," has been in "Rock of Ages" and received a best actor Tony nomination for his performance.

Bethesda, MD -- Now that the Supreme Court has remanded Association for Molecular Pathology et al. v. Myriad Genetics, Inc., et al. (AMP v. Myriad) to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit for further consideration, AMP is optimistic that it will ultimately prevail in its lawsuit to invalidate patents on two genes that are known to cause breast cancer.

"Our members have witnessed the adverse effects of gene patents on patient care," stated Iris Schrijver, AMP President. "By awarding monopolies in testing of patented genes, these patents reduce patient access to genetic tests, increase test prices, and stand in the way of innovations in diagnostic methods." Further, Dr. Schrijver added, "Because variation in gene sequences plays an important role in the development and progression of many diseases, through gene patents patent holders can essentially gain ownership of the understanding of some diseases and of certain areas of patient care itself."

Stated Roger D. Klein, MD, JD, Chair of the AMP Professional Relations Committee: "We were extremely encouraged by the Supreme Court's reaffirmation in its Prometheus decision of the longstanding principle that natural phenomena are not patent eligible. In Prometheus, the Supreme Court clearly ruled that the correlation between a biomarker and a clinical phenotype cannot be patented. Similarly, in light of this decision we expect that the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will ultimately find that patents on natural products, in this case BRCA1 and BRCA2, cannot be used to exclude physicians and others from examining their patient's genes for disease-related variants."

In its original decision, the Appeals Court held that human gene sequences are patentable subject matter when separated from their native state within cells. This is really a 'form versus substance' argument, said Mary Williams, AMP Executive Director. "A disease-causing mutation means the same thing for the patient irrespective of whether a gene is examined inside or outside the patient's body."

"AMP is looking forward to the proceedings in the lower court. We are confident that optimal patient care and sound science will ultimately prevail," stated Williams.

There was a time when kids just kind of kept themselves in shape; overweight kids were the exception. Nowadays, however, with childhood obesity on the rise, parents, teachers, and caregivers are all finding it necessary to implement fitness programs and encourage fit lifestyles for kids.

So how can you teach your child healthy fitness habits that will stay with them for a lifetime? Here are some ideas.

Participation

Let your kids in on your fitness routine. (Don?t have one? There?s the first step ? implement one!) Have them come along on your morning walk or run, or let them do a workout video with you. It might take some time to get them integrated, but it introduces them to the concept of regular workouts and the idea that exercise is fun. This also puts you in the position of positive role model for your kids.

Playtime = Fitness Time

Children are naturally playful. Engaging in free play is one of the best ways to encourage them to get in shape and develop healthy habits. Toddlers like to dance and be active at all kinds of play, as do preschoolers. Older kids may enjoy playing sports or just running races with their friends.

If it?s snowing, get the kids to go outside and play in it; in the fall, rake leaves into piles and jump in. Spring and summer provide all kinds of outdoor possibilities. The point is to deliberately integrate active play time into your child?s day.

Make the Time

Because we tend to expect fitness to come naturally to kids, many families neglect to schedule it in. But these days, that?s an important step. Make sure your kids have the time to be active and move around. Sometimes, we spend a lot of our day telling our children to be still, be quiet, pay attention, and so forth. Try to schedule in some time when your child can be physically active.

Playgrounds

Playgrounds exist for a reason ? play! Make it a point to take your child to a playground several times a week. Make playdates with other moms and kids if you like, and make it a regular thing. When the weather gets bad, see if you can continue your habit in an indoor play area, community center gym, or church fellowship hall.

Family Sports

Signing your kids up for sports is a great idea, but if your child is the shy type, he or she may benefit more from family sports. Also, if the family participates, it encourages Mom and Dad to exercise, too.

Personal Finance: Tax Refunds to be Spent En Masse this Year ...

According to Capital One Bank, most Americans who receive a tax refund will promptly spend it in some form or fashion this year. The average refund, which has been estimated at $2,913, will go in many cases to ?everyday expenses? (28 percent), while another 28 percent of those surveyed plan to make a major purchase like electronics, a vacation, or new clothing and accessories[1]. A little less than a third of those surveyed reported a plan to save ?at least part of the money,? however, while 17 percent anticipated paying down a debt and five percent intended to invest the funds.

Interestingly, 69 percent of all Americans do not calculate their tax refund or tax payment into their annual budget, the survey showed. And those who owe taxes do not appear to be planning ahead much either. Only 25 percent have money set aside specifically for taxes, while 19 percent will work out a payment plan with the IRS. 32 percent will pay up front, but will have to dip into personal savings to do so. [2]?Tax season is a good opportunity for people to plan ahead,? one financial planner pointed out, adding that tax refunds represent ?a good opportunity for people to plan ahead with an eye toward their future goals and financial health.? This is the second year in a row that this survey has indicated that a third or more of Americans plan to spend part or all of their refund.

With the American Idol top 10 taking the stage again tonight, and with this shaping up to be one of the more hotly-contested seasons to date, it's time for the first THG Power Poll of the season.

Who do you see as the favorite right now?

10. Deandre Brackensick: Would have been our choice to leave after last week's debacle. He can hit the high notes... and that's about it.

3. Jessica Sanchez: Will go down in Idol history for her version of “I Will Always Love You." That should be enough to keep her around for awhile. But can she go outside the world of ballads? A less-than-impressive take on “Turn the Beat Around" causes us to wonder.

2. Hollie Cavanagh: Has she had an off week yet? Memorable auditions of “Reflection,” “All the Man That I Need,” and “The Power of Love" prove she has staying power. Could work on her versatility and stage presence.

1. Phillip Phillips: He's a cute young white guy with a guitar. Until American Idol viewers prove they are capable of crowning someone else, he has to be the favorite.

Structure of ?salvia? receptor solved

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? At the molecular level, drugs like salvinorin A (the active ingredient of the hallucinogenic plant Salvia divinorum) work by activating specific proteins, known as receptors, in the brain and body.

Salvinorin A, the most potent naturally occurring hallucinogen, is unusual in that it interacts with only one receptor in the human brain -- the kappa opioid receptor (KOR). Scientists know of four distinct types of opioid receptors, but until now the structure of the 'salvia receptor', and the details about how salvinorin A and other drugs interact with it, was a mystery.

In a research paper published March 21 in the journal Nature, scientists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Scripps Research Foundation and two other institutions revealed the first-ever glimpse of the complete structure of the KOR. The finding could accelerate the development of new drugs to treat addiction, depression, anxiety, chronic pain and many other conditions.

"Once we see the structure of the receptor, it becomes easier for us to develop drugs that target the receptor in ways that might be beneficial for medical therapy," said Bryan Roth, MD, PhD, the Michael Hooker Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology at UNC and one of the paper's authors. "Drugs that block the receptor are potentially useful for treating a number of serious illnesses including chronic pain, cocaine addiction and other diseases."

The KOR is responsible for the action of drugs that affect human consciousness, awareness of pain and mood. The KOR is the only receptor that binds salvinorin A -- the active ingredient of the widely-abused hallucinogenic plant Salvia divinorum (also known as 'Magic mint', 'Salvia' and so on). Salvia use has surged among teenagers and young adults with more than 5 percent reporting usage in the past year.*

Knowing KOR's structure offers insights about how salvia and other drugs work. The finding also could help scientists design medicines that either activate or block KOR to benefit patients.

The research team crystallized KOR using JDTic, a drug currently in early-stage human trials; JDTic keeps KOR in an inactive state and blocks the actions of salvinorin A. In studies using animal models, JDTic has shown promise for treating cocaine and nicotine addiction, depression and anxiety.

The downside of JDTic and similar drugs targeting KOR is that they can exert their actions for weeks, whereas most prescribed medicines are cleared within 18-24 hours. "Now that we have the [KOR] structure, it opens up the possibility for us to make drugs that have the same action as JDTic but have better pharmaceutical properties," said Roth.

Last Wednesday, March 14, voting opened for the 5th Annual Children's Choice Book Awards here. This program is the only one of its kind. First, in 4 of the 6 categories (Book of the Year for 4 different age groups beginning with Kindergarteners and ending with teens), kids and teens select the finalists. Approximately 20,000 kids and teens from across the country participate in the part of the program. To select the Author of the Year and Illustrator of the Year finalists we review bestseller lists. Second, this is a national program where kids and teens select the winners. Votes have already been submitted by participants in every state in the country (and beyond). We are expecting to receive one million votes this year.

The program was developed 5 years ago by the Children's Book Council and the literacy foundation Every Child a Reader for a number of reasons.

• It makes reading fun and gives kids an easy way to talk about their favorite books with their friends - yes, it makes talking about books fun for kids.?
• It gives kids and teens a chance to express themselves and let book creators know what works best for them and what they love most.?

The Kingston DataTraveler R500 ($200 street) may not be the fastest flash drive around, limited as it is to USB 2.0 instead of 3.0, but it is certainly one of the largest, offering a whopping 128GB of storage space. Wrap it all in a rugged, moisture-resistant enclosure, and you've got a storage device that's ready to go just about anywhere.

Design and Features
The DataTraveler R500 is a high-capacity flash drive about the size of a Bic lighter. A two-toned black and orange color scheme makes it highly visible, and a tether point on the back of the drive makes it easy to attach to a key ring or lanyard. Measuring 0.5 by 0.9 by 2.8 inches (HWD), the R500 may crowd out neighboring ports, but it's still fairly slim and weighs only 1 ounce.

The rubber housing provides protection against the hazards of everyday life, from dropping your keys on the floor to leaving your drive in your pocket as it goes through the laundry. The drive also has a slight tapering from front to back, and the back end is narrow enough that the cap can be slipped over the end when the drive is in use.

The drive comes preformatted to FAT32, meaning that it is ready to go out of the box on virtually any system, whether it's a Windows, Mac, or Linux machine. There's also no extraneous software included, so you get nothing but uncluttered storage, without the hassles of setting up a password or dealing with management software.

Offering a hefty 128GB of storage space, the DataTraveler R500 sells for $1.56 per gigabyte. Though it sells for a higher overall price, this is a lower cost per GB than is offered by other high-capacity drives, like the USB 3.0-based Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (32GB) ($80 street, 4 stars) ($2.35 per GB) or the Corsair Flash Voyager GT ($64.99 direct, 4 stars) ($2.03 per GB).

Performance
Though it couldn't run PCMark 7, the DataTraveler R500 still produced decent read and write speeds, with read speeds of 30 MBps and write speeds of 21 MBps. While these numbers can't match the blazing fast speeds offered by USB 3.0 drives, they still represent tolerable performance from a USB 2.0 drive with so much storage capacity.

The biggest thing that the DataTraveler R500 has going for it is that it's just that?big. 128GB is a lot of storage space, and while that capacious storage might be faster accessed with a USB 3.0 connection, there's still plenty to be said about having that much storage space on hand wherever you go. It also benefits from a rugged rubber housing, so your files and photos will be well protected.
